Reformers Unanimous?

The big letters on the sign said, ADDICTIONS PROGRAM, while the less conspicuous words were "Reformers Unanimous". The sign itself was a banner that for several months has been hanging outside a Free Will Baptist Church not far from our home, and like thousands of others on this busy street I pass by it several times a day. Obviously it caught my eye.

The idea of an "addiction program" touched a nerve, since for the past 25 years I've been an active and not very anonymous member of another addiction recovery program known euphemistically as "a well known Twelve Step program", but trust me: we don't meet in Free Will Baptist Churches. In this part of the country they're not exactly hot spots for recovering addicts of any stripe, and appear to endorse free will about as much as endorsing Harry Potter. The oxymoronic FWB churches are, as we used to say, "hard shell Baptist." That sign on the lawn appeared to be as incongruous there as a "Saturday nite bingo" banner.

Obviously, nosey me just had to find out more about Reformers Unanimous! So it was that last Friday evening, a few minutes before the advertised 7:00 hour, I drove into the church's parking lot. It seemed to be the better part of wisdom to back the car into a remote parking space so that the hospital clergy sticker on the rear bumper might not be quite so obvious.

About 12 or 15 people were there, mostly men, visiting and chatting, several of whom came over to graciously welcome me and invite me into the sanctuary, where the program began. I discovered that there were three components of the nearly two hour session:

- a 20 minute DVD by the founder of this national program, basically a 20 minute rapid-fire Bible study of out-of-context passages,
- followed by a 30 minute session with a "counselor" talking non-stop to the three of us who were new, giving his "testimony" of Jesus' freeing him from his addiction to alcohol and drugs, than a break for refreshments,
- and finally a 30 minute "preaching" by the minister, another lickety-split Bible study with a fill-in-the-blanks lesson booklet.

All in all, it was a completely undisguised evening of fundamentalist Christian theology. Its relationship to addiction and recovery was remote, to be generous. During one of the breaks, the "counselor" inquired as to what had brought me there, and I told him honestly that I had seen the sign outside, and that I was curious about RU. I added that I'd been in a recovery program for many years, and was also a committed Christian who felt no contradiction between these two parts of my life. Other requests for information, such as where I lived and where I went to church, I ducked. The "counselor" moved on to more fertile ground.

There was, unfortunately to my mind, no talk of any recovery process (once you were saved you were recovered), and they rejected the more familiar program of Alcoholics Anonymous on the grounds first, that AA refers to the need of a self-defined Higher Power instead of RU's specific dependence on being "saved" through Jesus as the key to overcoming addiction, and second, that AA members always and forever identify themselves as "alcoholics" whereas these folks believe Jesus has delivered them from that condition and they were no longer alcoholics. They were now, they claimed, "addicted to Jesus".

We had one more break for refreshments, popcorn and caffeine-free sodas (no coffee), and I was encouraged to visit the RU table where they had a variety of books, pamphlets, CDs, DVDs, t-shirts, ball caps and other memorabilia for sale, (the ball point pens were free) and several members directly asked where I went to church and would I join them on Sunday. I demurred, nor did I buy a ball cap or two.

They certainly were pleasant folks, and obviously deeply believing Christians of a particular variety, but as soon as possible I eased my way out the door, walked briskly across the parking lot, and drove off, clergy sticker shining in the reflected light of the church.

Dear Sir,

I have attended several different meetings and I'm not knocking AA or NA but I don't agree that once an addict always an addict. I smoked marijuana most of my life, drank on occasion and didn't try the harder drugs until later in life, and get this I thought I was a good person. But it took getting into a good church to realize that the void I was trying to fill with drugs and alcohol was a deeper issue that I found out later in life ONLY the Lord Jesus could fix. I was one of those people who did not like to go to church, didn't think I needed church, even went so far as to say if you can't see it, how can you say it's real. But I came to realize after a very long addiction to crack/cocaine, exstacy, and crystal meth that I finally tried Jesus and was saved in a local church and I can honestly say you may not be able to see the wind but you can definately see the effects of it, much like the feeling you get from the Lord. I understand the feelings most people have about church but I think the FWB Church that hosts these meetings for those who want a Christian based meeting is doing a wonderful job and to each his own, but I firmly believe that Only The Truth Makes Free and that Truth is found ONLY with Jesus Christ.

I am the Pastor of this Free WIll Baptist Church that you have written about. There are a number of things in your article that are true and also some that are untrue. Any of these untruths could have been solved very easily by talking with me about what you were looking for and I'm not afraid of a critique of our ministry. The true things first. Yes we do believe that Jesus Christ can heal us of our addictions. You say you have a clergy sticker on your car. Does that mean that you at least believe in God. Seems to me that any reasonable believer would at least believe that God could heal of anything, even addictions. I would have had more respect for an athiest that didn't like us to talk bad about Jesus than yourself. Say what you want to, but there was a room full of people who had been delivered from their addiction. Their lives and families have also been changed and there is every evidence that something has delivered them from their addiction. Please argue with that! Secondly, the video was not at all out of context, unless you don't believe any of the bible. The Bible study at the end, was fill in the blank. Sorry that confused you, but it helps people to understand the Bible when they can actually look at the verse and hear it explained as we talk. But again, you have to actually believe the Bible to understand this part. The books and info we offer are to help people as they recover, the refreshments are not caffeine free. This shows how far you were off for the whole program. We usually don't make coffee in the summer, unless someone ask. In closing, next time it would seem that any addict, AA or NA program, would be excited about any program that would help someone off their addiction. We have a number of our guys that still go to AA and NA. But as always, those of you in AA and NA make that program your god andyou hate anything to do with the real God, you laugh at anything that seems Christian, and even somehow have a litle sticker on your car that you think makes you an authority on scripture. We have more than a sticker, we have Christ in our hearts. Try it sometime.

3 CHEERS for a church that wants to host and address addictions in today's society - including the addicts that probably sit in the same church on Sunday!

The same banner sat outside First Baptist Church in Rosemount, MN and I'm glad it did!

I have friends that have a 15 year history of METH and have had 2 years of victory over their addictions through RU!

OH-and now they are taking the RU program into jails and prisons too? What gives - are their addicts in need there too?

Praise God for the Churches that sponsor an RU Chapter! And if you or a family member are addicted, feel free to go to www.ReformU.com

RU has an 85% success rate. AA admits on their own website that 90% of their students return to their addiction within a year. God Bless RU!

I am sorry Bob that the Pastor of this church responded to you in the way that he did in his reply to your blog post. I can't believe that a Christian, let alone a Pastor, would be so short and misunderstanding of your position. He is right about some things, but He has completely the wrong attitude in his response. To accuse you of not knowing your Bible is flat out wrong, especially in a place like this where you can't have genuine conversation and response; only replies and replies to replies.

Anyways, thanks for visiting RU. I love it. It has changed my life. Since coming to RU two years ago, I have regained my walk with God, met a fine young lady and gotten engaged. With what I was involved in before, this never would have happened. I praise God for RU and the work that it did in my life through the truths of the Christ-life!

Thank you for your post. I was told today that 'reformers' would be good for me and that I should look into their 6 month program. I never heard of them. So I meticulously went through their application, daily schedule, and rules and regulations. I couldnt help but get a very 'clockwork orange' reprogramming feel from it. Dont get me wrong I'm for any program that helps people but I come more from the science perspective of God and not the man made religious one and I have a major aversion to the whole 'Jesus died for our sins and if you accept him you'll be saved and perfect. Of course we're all human and no ones perfect but I do believe we are all here to learn certain life lessons and go thru certain experiences to be better on a spiritual level. When I read the AA manual I felt that they had the whole higher power thing down to a tee to what my own 'spiritual beliefs' are. Back to 'reformers' looking at their rules and regulations reads like something out of the mormon fundamentalist church (the polygamy one not the modern day one or at least what the pre-marriage fundamentalists rules are). Read the book 'escape' by carolyn jessop or stolen innocence for more clarity. You hit it right on the head that the focus is on getting saved and not recovery and what true recovery really means. Another telling aspect is how much money it takes to get accepted into the program and that you have to bring so much with you (clothing, hygiene) that the $1000 plus dollars initial fee doesnt even cover. Then your church sponsor is responsible for almost $800 dollars a month to keep in you in the program. Also this is a work program and the money you make covers all unpaid expenses. The men do manual labor jobs based on experience and the women are placed in clerical jobs. It doesnt mention anything about getting any real job training experience that you dont currently have and that may actually help you once your done with the program. Your typical homeless person (the ones who really need help)would never qualify for this program. The focus really seems to on people who are addicts but are married with kids. I hope I'm wrong on that but even someone like myself who is out of work, single with no kids would probably have a much more difficult time 'qualifying.' Anywayz I know for myself and my situation this is not a program for me. I'm not an addict (maybe to facebook and such like) just a person who needs a job and the money to get out of my current living environment and the toxic addicted people I have to put up with.

This is to plann9. First off I wish you the best of luck in finding help with whatever addiction you may have. You said that RU sounds like something out of a polygamy type Mormon church. My question is how do you see the similarities between RU and Mormons. You said you believe in a higher power, "God". Then you would believe that the higher power created us I would assume. If this higher power "GOD' created us, don't you think he would have the power to preserve his word or commands to the people. I believe this and I will tell you why. There is no historical proof proving an atheist or any other NON Christian faiths but endless historical accounts supporting not religion but Faith in Jesus and God the father. Religion, church, pastor, priest will never save a single soul, only Faith in Jesus Christ will. If anyone says they can save you, they are uneducated in what the Bible says. There is a far difference between Mormons and Baptists or mainstream Christians. There are many many Mormons that are wonderful people that do alot of good for their country and community but good works never got anyone into heaven only Faith and Trust in Jesus Christ, my savior. My church is starting a RU chapter and we are so excited to be able to help people who are struggling like yourself. You don't have to go away to the RU in house treatment, there are many RU meetings at your local churches on Friday nights. IT is free and I ask that you give it a try and just go to at least one meeting. Even if you don't believe in God like the way I do, the messege delivered may help you anyways. My friend I will pray for you, and I respect your stance on religion, and by no means trying to rag on you. I just want to see people steered in the right direction, in which I beleive Christ is the way. Peace be with you plann9 and may God show you the path to salvation and deliver you from the pain you may have in your life...

Sincerely,

Jason.....Michigan

HERE IS A THOUGHT FOR ANYONE CONSIDERING A PROGRAM; get your information from the source.......GO VISIT THE PROGRAM! That is what I did when a young man wanted to look at RU Residential Program in Rockford. He was nervous. He had been to several other facilities/programs since his early teens. He was concerned that his "religious upbringing" would conflict with what he was being taught at RU.

SO, Myslef, a former student (graduate) and the young mand took the 5 hour car trip (with only a few days of asking for and receiving permission to visit) and spent a day or two at teh facility and were given ample access to discuss the program, background, student population, etc with anyone and everyone we wanted to.

GUESS WHAT? Questions Answered - no doubts!!!

I was there when Steve started Reformers Unanimous. it was 15 people in the basement of the church. Ive seen hundreds of people come through the system as it grew to 800 meetings in 13 countries. Jesus HEALS and delivers. County Judges love RU...because it WORKS.

I truly hope that your program works. I unfortunately was a member of a church which followed Hyles-Anderson founder Jack Hyles. Due to the reports that came out about him and the removal from the pulpit of his son-in-law and in a different state the removal of his son is not a stellar endorsement of RU's founder educational and spiritual mentorship. The church I was a member of has now distanced themselves from any association with Hyles-Anderson. It would be really nice if finally some "Christian" based program really had some success with addiction. Addiction is a "shame based" disorder. Most churches I have been around deal far more in rules and words than compassion and "meeting a person where they are at." I would imagine that if RU's program really works AA and NA and other 12 step programs might shut their doors. The wonderful freeing thing about 12 step programs is their intentional lack of "dogma." Even Jesus said, "Where the law is there is a spirit of death." It's amazing to me how religion says on the one hand that God is all powerful and loving and how we cannot lose our salvation and how legalistic and judgmental most churches are. I truly hope you break the mold and have some independently verifiable results which show the world there is at least one true "hospital for sinners."
